Tuesday July 5th

 Tuesday July 5

The alarm goes off at 545 am so Nicholas can enter all his university classes at 6 am. Back to sleep at 630 for an hour then mum and dad get up and going while teenagers continue to sleep til noon.

Krista and Darren headed to Times Square and picked up Broadway tickets to Harry Potter Cursed Child. A highly necessary trip to Starbucks and a relaxing drink in Times Square for a bit. Touring around for a while and then back to the hotel for lunch and rouse the boys.

Once we got them moving, E headed over to a high rise called The Edge. 100 stories in height and taller than the Empire State Building (as well as half the cost). For $42, we rode to the top and had AMAZING VIEWS OF THE TRI STATE AREA let alone just NYC. UNBELIEVABLE!

Crazy thing of note - if you book the restaurant three weeks in advance, you ride up for free as long as you spend $30pp while you’re up there. Darn! Something for others to benefit from!

After more than an hour there, the family walked back to the hotel and I went on a 14 block trek to buy international stamps from the post office to mail some postcards. Yikes what an adventure that was. Of course I went off the beaten path down some side streets and back alleys to get a feel for the heart of the communities.

Every street in Manhattan is smothered in bags and bags of garbage for the last three days. Independence Day put a dent in the garbage schedule and the city is one massive garbage dump as far as the eye can see. Several piles had well over 100 Super large bags just piled up on the street blocking traffic. And the smells - yikes. It’s been 90+ degrees all week. Phew. It’s a real stinker in some places.

Bought 10 stamps. Jogged back to hotel. Shower #2 required. Out the door to subway and downtown to Times Square for pizza at Joes and drinks at Margaritaville.

Off to the Broadway theatre for Harry Potter - The Cursed Child - a rendition of post Harry Potter with everyone’s kids living at Hogwarts but Albus goes back in time to save Diggory only to mess with the timeline and butterfly effect bringing Voldemort back to life but throwing the world into darkness and terror. Several repairs attempted but things get worse.

All gets fixed by the end of the 3.5 hour show.

Snacks and drinks were through the roof. $12 for a small cup of popcorn - $20 for a can of beer. Yahoo.

Amazing special effects - disappearing characters - flames - lasers - black lights - sound waves. You name it, it had it. Lots of clapping and old characters brought back to life and highlighted. Very cool.

Subway ride home at 11.

Not as busy day as yesterday but tomorrow is a gong show for our last day in NYC!
