Saturday July 16
Last nights wicked thunderstorm and lighting display was incredible.
This morning’s garbage truck pickup outside our door at 530 am not so much. But I was awake already. My sleep talking Biker roommate had a few stories to share starting at 5 am so that’s been fun too 😉🤪😆
Finally got everyone up and moving by 930 And moved all our stuff over to the Microtel hotel next door - a vast improvement over the tenement housing at the Motel 6.
We wandered over to Perkins for breakfast and had a delicious plate of eggs bacon and pancakes. We walked back to the bikes and headed out for fuel and onto the highway to Mount Rushmore. The highway was twisty and turny but we weren’t going Mach 2 like the last two days so it was enjoyable to go slowly and try to take in a few sights. You only get a split second to look at things though as you need to focus on the road and bikes in front of you.
We got to the monument and like everything we found in the US over the last three weeks, national monuments and museums are free but parking is the kicker. $10/bike. Drat.
We got some nice photos and visited some folks and then back on the road down into Keystone to tour around.
We stopped at Dahl’s Chainsaw art and took a heap of photos. Some incredible work here by a dozen folks working away in the outdoor shop.
We heard into town and stopped for pizza at Boss’ Pizza & Chicken and some Coke Zeroes and Diet. Must stay hydrated in this 95 degree heat.
We toured around all the shops for an hour and jumped back on the bikes and did some really curvy roads on the way over to Custer to see the Crazy Horse monument.
We bypassed it years ago with the boys and it was nice to come see it but there’s much work to be done.
Only his head has been completed and it will take an estimated 80 years to complete the horse he is riding underneath him.
We watched a singing dancing presentation outdoors and enjoyed the cloudy afternoon and light breeze on a lovely Saturday afternoon.
Toured back through Hill City - like driving From radium to Cranbrook. So scenic! E we got back to the hotel and showed up and caught a Lyft ride downtown to the Firehouse restaurant and had a delicious meal.
We wandered around downtown taking pictures with all the bronze statues of American Presidents before catching a Lyft back home.
Another exciting day in the books. Off to Sturgis tomorrow!!
